Submissions
Guidelines
We accept submissions that relate to the theme of an up-coming issue. We also accept submissions for the non-topical section of the magazine—writings that consist of a series of very short fragments (especially aphorisms) as well as pieces about fragmentary writing in general. We publish up to 15 theme-based contributions per issue, and up to 5 non-topical pieces.
Currently we are accepting theme-based submissions for the following two issues:
Micro-essays
Issue #6, Spring 2010
Submissions deadline: December 31, 2009
Issue will appear online in March 2010
Submit one micro essay or a series of micro essays on any topic. Each essay should be no longer than approximately 800 words. If you’re submitting a series of micro essays, submit up to 5. Micro essays may be poetic, literary, philosophical, psychological, etc.
Solitude
Issue #7, Fall 2010
Submissions deadline: July 1, 2010
Issue will appear online in September 2010
The theme-based submissions for the issue on Solitude may consist of a single short piece or a series of fragments. We publish vignettes, musings, notes, longer pieces that are broken up in some way, selections from diaries and notebooks, excerpts from unpublished manuscripts, etc. We seek quality writings (especially psychological, philosophical, and poetic fragments) that are original and nontraditional. (For examples of the kind of writing we seek, see In Pieces: An Anthology of Fragmentary Writing and previous issues of FragLit.)
A submission to the non-topical section can also consist of “FragNotes”—a piece that explores fragments as a genre from a personal or literary point of view. We prefer that these pieces be written in fragmented form themselves. (As an example of a FragNotes contribution, see Lauren Albert’s piece in Issue 2.)
We accept simultaneous submissions and will occasionally consider previously-published material. (Please include this information along with your submission, if appropriate, and notify us if your piece is accepted for publication elsewhere.) We also consider submissions from previous FragLit contributors.
If we publish your piece, as the author you retain the copyright (we only acquire one-time publication rights). Since we are a free online magazine, we do not pay contributors for their accepted works. However, your piece will always be accessible online because we archive all issues of the magazine.
To send a submission, please use this form. Indicate what issue your submission is for and if you’re submitting to the themed or non-topical section. You may send your submission in the body of your email if it’s short, or via attachment (up to approximately 15 manuscript pages). Submissions should be titled. Please include a short bio (under 100 words) and use the word “Submission” in your subject line. We will send you an email if we accept your submission for publication.
