Olivia Dresher's Library of
Published Journals, Diaries, and Notebooks
Olivia Dresher's Library of Journals, Diaries, and
Notebooks consists of over 350 books, and the
collection is continually growing. The majority of the
journals and diaries in the library are by American and
European literary authors. Also represented in the
collection are journals and notebooks by philosophers,
visual artists, various historical figures, and those
who focused on contemporary issues or a spiritual life.
There is a separate section for Holocaust journals and
diaries. Finally, there are books about journal
writing, as well as various anthologies consisting of
selections from contemporary and historical women's and
men's diaries and journals. Within the collection,
there are slightly more male authors than female.
The library contains many First Editions and complete
sets, including the complete sets of journals and
diaries by such authors as Andre Gide, Thomas Merton,
Anais Nin, May Sarton, and Virginia Woolf. There are
also copies of different translations of the same
title—for example, there are 4 English
translations of the Pessoa notebooks (The Book of
Disquiet), each translation offering a different
window into an understanding and appreciation of this
writer's expression and vision.
Writers interested in journals and diaries are welcome
to visit the library (by appointment only). There are
duplicate copies of a few of the journals for sale, and
blank notebooks are for sale as well. The "journal
room" consists of a writing desk, seating areas, and
bookcases and shelves containing the journals. The room
also contains a collection of unpublished journal
manuscripts, as well as published letters, aphorisms,
fiction in journal and letter form, memoirs, and misc.
fragmentary writings.
