Southeast Asia (Fall 2004): Cambodia

Asian Swan

Asian Swan
November 12, 2004

It's six hours to Cambodia border from Bangkok on bus... "war zone" between two cultures...begging, dirt-brown, naked children; cart-pullers; trucks; gun-toting guards...I'm carrying my bike...105° + humidity. I'm about to drop dead; and then the storm subsides...and this majestic, Asian swan glides through showing off her plumage.

We got off the bus after 3 hours; about 7 p.m.... This is the sun setting over low mountains in Cambodia—wild flowers, mist; clean, lowland air...green, green...birds, toads, insect noises fill the air. On the right in this open field is a teak (?) farm house (it’s blurry cause of lowlight/no flash). Six more hours over the roughest dirt road to: Angkor! I’m here, finally I’m here!
